Programs that accept and, where possible, attempt to resolve complaints regarding agencies that offer the services of paraprofessional aides who provide assistance with personal hygiene (bathing, grooming and mouth care), clothing care, ambulation, seating, toileting, housekeeping (changing bed linens or other chores that are essential to the individual's health and comfort), food preparation and nutritional and environmental support for recently discharged hospital patients, elderly people and people with disabilities in their own homes or other settings. Typical complaints include confusion in communication when multiple caregivers are assigned to the same person, caregivers who are not punctual, inconsistent quality of care, lack of caregiver training, excessive amounts of time spent on the phone, payment issues and not being informed when a caregiver is ill.
Programs that publish information about health and residential care facilities (including hospitals, dialysis facilities, home health care agencies, nursing facilities and supportive housing for older adults and people with disabilities) that helps consumers compare the facilities in their area and choose the option that best meets their needs. Some programs limit their comparisons to treatment that is related to specific conditions, e.g., heart attack, heart failure or pneumonia.
Long or short-term health care institutions such as hospitals and nursing homes that provide beds for people who need diagnostic, treatment or convalescent care services which require that they remain at least overnight and often for extended periods of time.
Health centres, clinics, departments within hospitals, and other facilities that provide walk-in, walk-out diagnostic and treatment services for people whose care does not require confinement or a hospital stay.
Long or short-term care inpatient facilities, counselling agencies and therapists in private practice that offer diagnostic and treatment services for children, adolescents and/or adults who have an identifiable mental disorder such as depression or anxiety or for people who are experiencing difficult life transitions or are having problems coping with daily living.
