- enforces food safety, nutritional quality standards established by Health Canada
- responds to food borne illness outbreaks through food safety investigations and recalls
- guards against entry of foreign animal diseases to protect human and animal health
- prevention and control of the spread of certain foreign animal diseases
- sets standards and verifies industry compliance with federal acts and regulations
Complaints related to health concerns in restaurants and cafeterias should be referred to the appropriate public health unit.
Canadian food safety system is an area of shared jurisdiction between provincial, territorial and federal governments and is composed of medical, public health, and food inspection systems.
Rabies is a reportable disease under the Health of Animals Act. All suspected cases must be reported to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for immediate investigation by inspectors. |
