Transportation Safety Standards

Programs that are responsible for developing and enforcing regulations that are designed to ensure public safety on highways, railways, airlines, shipping lines and other modes of transportation; which enforce compliance with safety standards; and which investigate serious accidents involving civil aviation, railroad accidents, pipeline accidents, selected highway accidents, selected marine accidents and other transportation accidents that are catastrophic.

Student Transportation Services

Programs, usually within the formal education system, that operate school buses which transport students to and from school. Also included are programs that issue vouchers that enable students to use other means of transportation to and from school or which reimburse parents in situations where their children are not served by the school transportation system.

Pet Transportation

Programs that pay for or provide transportation for accompanied or unaccompanied pets to veterinary offices, clinics, animal grooming facilities or other needed animal-related services. This service may be available to people who have no means of private transportation or who, because of age, disability or other time commitments, are unable to transport the animal(s) themselves.

Travel

Programs organized by community or educational groups that provide opportunities for people of all ages to travel locally, throughout the country or abroad for the purpose of study or personal enjoyment; which help people with their travel plans; or which offer travel insurance for people who want to purchase it.

Transportation Advocacy Groups

Organizations that advocate for the development and ongoing improvement of local and regional transportation options for community residents that increase safety, reduce air and noise pollution, improve walking and cycling conditions, increase opportunities for physical activity and reduce automobile travel. Specific issues may include improved access to transportation services for older adults, people with disabilities, rural area residents and other groups; improved paratransit services; support for the development or expansion of specific transportation modes, e.g., light rail transit systems, ferry systems, inter-city rapid rail; increased use of the local public transit system, bicycle commuting, walking and other alternatives to automobile travel; safe and easy pedestrian access to popular destinations; highway construction and other infrastructure improvements such as bicycle paths/trails from outlying/suburban to city centres, pedestrian-oriented streets and safe bicycle parking facilities; and multimodal navigation tools that offer guidance for walking, cycling, driving and public transit use.

Maps

Programs that supply any of a wide variety of maps, charts, atlases or other guides including road maps, postal code maps, time zone maps, demographic maps, city centre maps, topographical and survey maps, weather charts or astronomical charts for residents of the community and travellers. Included are programs that give away or sell copies of maps to interested parties as well as those that maintain maps for research or related purposes.
